Background of the Study
Instagram captions have emerged as a significant medium for creative linguistic expression, where users experiment with word forms and structures to capture attention and convey nuanced messages. In Nigeria, Instagram users blend indigenous languages with English and other global languages, resulting in morphological innovations that challenge conventional word formation rules. These innovations include the use of abbreviations, creative affixation, and hybrid word forms that reflect the dynamic socio-cultural landscape of Nigeria (Adeniyi, 2023). This study appraises morphological innovation by analyzing Instagram captions, focusing on how digital communication fosters the creation of new lexical forms. The research examines the interplay between cultural identity, visual aesthetics, and linguistic creativity, revealing that morphological change in digital spaces is both a reflection of and a contributor to broader language evolution (Okoro, 2024). By integrating digital semiotics with morphological analysis, the study aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of how innovative language practices emerge and spread through social media.
Statement of the Problem
Although morphological innovations in digital communication are increasingly visible on platforms like Instagram, there is limited research specifically focused on Instagram captions in Nigeria. The mechanisms behind the creation and dissemination of novel word forms remain underexplored, leaving a gap in our understanding of digital morphological change. This study seeks to address this gap by examining the linguistic creativity embedded in Instagram captions, thereby uncovering the factors that drive morphological innovation in a digital context (Chinwe, 2024).
